Bio:
Ruben Whitter; of Jamaican descent; has a “real presence on the stage” as noted by East Midlands Theatre reviewer Cathy Robinson in his home of the classical stage when portraying characters regardless of race (Jonathan Swift in Queen Anne - Lace Market Theatre Nottingham, Guy Evans dir. 2022) with an acclaimed “clipped [style of] speech” that transports the audience into worlds such as pre-21st Century Britain; as well as reflecting true-to-life environments in modern-written plays in which Whitter champions characters from the African diaspora with accuracy and authenticity. (Godolfo in A Mexibbean Adventure - The Hilton Village Hall, Richard Leyton and Dave Bullimore, dir. 2016) as a captivating actor with a remarkable ability to engage and entertain whilst bringing both narrative-driven and bespoke characters to life that often transcends inclusive story arcs (Deb/Influencer in Breaking News - Old Rep Theatre Birmingham, Megan Morgan dir. 2024). Whitter is also skilled at contributing to amusement for the audience through situational humour, as well as both sharp and brooding turns of drama (Demitrius in A Midsummer Nights Dream - Camden Fringe Festival, Genevive Rey dir. 2014) often using different voice levels when commanded by the character in context (Banzai/Kamari in All These Scars - Old Rep Theatre, Michelle Whitehurst dir. 2024).
Whitter has grew to playfully dance between dramatics and the audience’s laughter through the characters he portrays, embracing the crowd’s anticipation of spontaneity, which encourages their relaxation and engagement which in turn underscores Whitter’s unique vibrant essence that contributes to an inclusive space where laughter knows no bounds (Extra-Live theatre workshop w/ Kriya Arts - in The Hive - London 2014). On stage, Whitter also incorporates teachings from the past that encourages the exploration of socio-cultural dilemmas such as dissonant logic rooted in character's moral stances when contrasted with contemporary society (21st Century Moral Character workshop w/ Aurora Cano - King's College London 2016) alongside emotional generosity thanks to contemporary-focused training methods from community-driven institutions; for example; from being an integral part of acting collectives (Glu Theatre Birmingham w/ Stephanie Myles 2024). Cutting his teeth on improv became a theatrical through-line for Whitter that gives background to his freedom that he effortlessly displays. (Improvational Technique workshop w/ Stephen Davinson - The Nursery Theatre - London, 2015).
